In June, the 52nd annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival hosted the debut performance from the Toy Factory Project, a proper Southern rock supergroup honoring the late Toy Caldwell and the music of the Marshall Tucker Band. Now, as the ensemble prepares to take the stage again with a pair of dates at The Capitol Theatre in February, they’ve shared a full-show video of that unforgettable debut.
Led and assembled by Marshall Tucker Band’s co-founding drummer Paul T. Riddle, the ensemble revived the legendary songs of co-founding guitarist and principal songwriter Caldwell with an all-star cast of Southern rock torchbearers. Riddle first imagined the project 13 years ago to recognize the achievements of Caldwell, who passed in 1993, and found the right band to carry his mantle with devotees like Marcus King on guitar and vocals, Oteil Burbridge on bass, Charlie Starr on guitar and vocals, Josh Shilling on keys and vocals and Billy Contreras on fiddle.
“It overwhelms me, the love and the respect they have for the music and each other is completely egoless,” Riddle said in feature for the latest issue of Relix. “They are all dear friends and great human beings—there’s no musicians on the planet I admire more than those guys. Oteil said, ‘We’ve got something that everybody wishes they have, and that’s complete joy.’ It’s about the love of the music. I thought for so long about who would fit, and how it would, and Oteil said, ‘If God hasn’t told you yet, he’ll let you know.’ It was meant to be, and it’s been really hard for me to get used to their love of the music.”
Onstage, the Toy Factory Project was much more than a tribute. With an esteemed cast collectively representing Dead & Company, Blackberry Smoke, the best of Nashville’s session scene and more, the band remained faithful to the originators’ spirit while adding new warmth and color with Shilling’s Hammond B3 organ and Contreras’ fiddle, supercharged by the dual guitar attack from King and Starr. Over Riddle’s backbeat, the group served up Marshall Tucker Band essentials like “This Ol’ Cowboy,” “Blue Ridge Mountain Sky,” both featuring a sit-in from Belá Fleck, and “Long Hard Ride,” with Telluride Bluegrass staple Sam Bush.
The Toy Factory Project’s public debut was preceded by a series of covert recording sessions at Peter Frampton’s Nashville studio; there, the supergroup cut an album that reinterprets the Marshall Tucker Band’s classic catalog, including special guest appearances from Frampton and Vince Gill. While awaiting an official release date for that record, fans can find tickets for the band’s two-night stand at The Capitol Theatre at toyfactoryproject.com.
