Bob Wagner will release his debut solo album, I’ve Been Down, on June 12 via RPF Records/Royal Potato Family. The announcement comes as the guitarist, who is based in the Burlington, Vt. area, is touring the country as part of Mike Gordon’s solo band. After sharing the stage with the Phish bassist at a variety of Vermont jam sessions during the past 15 years, Wagner joined Gordon’s outfit last year for their lone performance, which took place in New Orleans, and he has been on the road with him this March.

“A pretty regular thing that happens at shows is I end up doing a song or two on lead during the night,” Wagner said in a statement of his decision to release a solo album after years of working alongside Josh Panda and Kat Wright. “After the gigs, people were always coming up to me asking where they could see my band.”

Wagner recorded I’ve Been Down at The Studio Nashville, a space that has previously hosted The Wood Brothers, Seth Walker and Steve Poltz. Sturgill Simpson guitarist/Teleacaster master Laur Joamets, Wood Brothers guitarist Oliver Wood and Wood Brothers multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix all contributed to the 10-track set.

Gordon has already added a number of the LP’s tunes to his setlists this year, including “Sad and Lonesome” and “Universe is Calling.” On Friday, while performing at Nashville’s Brooklyn Bowl, Gordon also debuted  “Good Night and Good Luck,” another tune that appears on I’ve Been Down.

Rix and pedal-steel player Brett Lanier, known for his work with The Barr Brothers, emerged to play on the tune as well. The musicians, who moved between instruments during the segment, also sat in on Gordon’s “Fling Your Head,” which Phish introduced in Mexico earlier this year, and “Steps” before joining in on the Wagner cut.

Gordon’s band will perform in Charleston, SC this evening.
