Last night, guitarist Julian Lage played with Bob Dylan throughout his entire set at Santa Barbara, CA’s Santa Barbara Bowl. Lage took the stage with Dylan’s band at the top of his set, after both Lucinda Williams and The John Doe Folk Trio supplied support duties, and filled in for guitarist Doug Lancio during the 16-song spot. Lancio has been Dylan’s steady guitarist since the Rough and Rowdy Ways World Wide Tour began in November of 2021, following a period where the Bard was off the road due to the pandemic. No mention is was made from the stage about Lancio’s absence.

The evening’s setlist kicked off with “To Be Alone With You” and came to a close with “I Shall Be Released,” with Dylan sticking to electric keyboard, harmonica and vocals throughout the night. (A few times this run, however, he has picked up his once-signature acoustic guitar.) Though last night’s setlist didn’t deviate from the norm, Dylan has been mixing things up more than usual recently and busted out “Tryin’ to Get to Heaven” for the first time since December 8, 2019 this past Friday at The Venue at Thunder Valley Casino in Lincoln, CA.

Lage recently opened for and sat in with Goose as well. He will appear next under his own name at New York’s National Sawdust on June 29. Dylan will perform in Highland, CA this evening.
