Following a two week European tour, Goose returned to their home continent and kicked off an extensive summer tour on Saturday night. The group appeared at Toronto’s RBC Amphitheatre for a Canadian gig, with the band slated to return to the country on August 18 at Vancouver’s Commodore Ballroom. This was the band’s first show following the Friday release of the quartet’s new studio album, Big Modern!
Goose opted not to focus on the new record on Saturday, instead drawing on material that spanned the band’s career. One early highlight was the opening “Animal,” which moved into “Flowdown” then back into “Animal.” The final two songs of the first set, “Dustin Hoffman” and “Hungersite,” each featured extended improvisation. Then the second set opened with a 46 minute sequence in which “Creatures” gave way to “So Ready.”
Julian Lage opened the show and there was some anticipation that he might appear with the headliner. On September 12, 2024 at Chicago’s Salt Shed Lage sat in with Goose for “A Western Sun” and “Turned Clouds.” The musicians did indeed revisit this collaboration midway through Goose’s second set in Toronto. That’s when when Lage joined in on version of “Travelers” which then segued into “This Old Sea.” He returned with Goose for the “Dripfield” encore.
A video of “Travelers” appears below. Tonight, Goose will open a two night stand at The Dome in Virginia Beach.
