On Saturday, Guster closed out a run of shows supporting The Avett Brothers at Vienna, VA’s Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts. At the end of their set, the Boston-bred ensemble invited out Avett Brothers fiddler Tania Elizabeth to assist on their original “Jesus on the Radio,” which appears on 2003’s Keep It Together. Also of note, during their set, The Avett Brothers offered their cover of The Cranberries’ “Linger” for the second time this week. As previously reported, the group busted out the tune in New Haven, CT, for the first time since 2018.
“Hey so playing shows last weekend with the Avett Brothers was, like, really fucken fun,” Guster posted after the show. “The few songs I knew well were bangers but what I didn’t anticipate was their vast universe - a Broadway musical, an album and tour with an avant-garde rock legend, their wildly successful side hustles (historical author, painter, solo albums galore), collabs with Henson puppets (!), etc etc. But the biggest revelation were the shows- pin drop quiet, the fans eager to receive, ready to amplify. I can’t say that I’ve seen a more respectful or receptive audience at this scale. It was a gas to find ourselves alongside another band of brothers with so much overlapping dna- their commitment to song craft and deep storytelling, their comfort with whimsy and chaos, and most importantly an arterial relationship with their fans. The Avett Brothers will perform with Drive-By Truckers at Memphis, TN’s Grind City Amphitheater on October 1 while Guster will appear with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra at Atlanta Symphony Hall on October 16 and 17.
