The Black Crowes Revive Ry Cooder Cover, More Originals
The Black Crowes continue to shuffle their setlists as the Southern Hospitality tour moves up the East Coast. While performing at Columbia, MD’s classic Merriweather Post Pavilion on Tuesday, the ensemble revived several different numbers–splicing those rarities between their biggest hits and live favorites.
A few songs into the show, the group dusted off the Three Snakes and One Charm track “Under a Mountain” for the first time this year; the number has been played on and off since its 1995 debut, though only a handful of times since its most recent 2022 revival. Then, soon after, the musicians offered the Warpaint track “Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution,” which they had busted out in Australia this past April but had not pulled out during the Southern Hospitality tour before this week.
However, the biggest surprise took place at the top of The Black Crowes’ encore when they kicked into “Boomer’s Story,” the title-track from Ry Cooder’s 1972 album. The Crowes first played the song in 1991, when they were still a young band, and have gone through several periods where “Boomer’s Story” was a regular part of their repertoire, yet they had not taken on the composition since November 6, 2013, shortly before the band broke up.
The Black Crowes’ extended summer tour will continue at Mansfield, MA’s Xfinity Center tomorrow.
