Warren Haynes and Julian Lage Join Tedeschi Trucks Band, Group Performs New Album In Its Entirety
Last evening at the Beacon Theatre, the mighty Tedeschi Trucks Band continued their March residency. This represented the official release date of Future Soul, the latest studio album from the TTB, who marked the occasion by performing the album during their first set. This group tracked the record from start to finish, offering the debut of “Ride On,” the lone selection from the record they had yet to play live. Following the 11 Future Soul tunes, the band revisited “I Want More” from 2016’s Let Me Get By, which segued into a set-closing cover of Santana’s “Soul Sacrifice.”
When the Tedeschi Trucks Band returned to the stage, the 12-piece ensemble expanded to 14 musicians. Guitarist Julian Lage appeared on the opener, which was a version of Derek and the Dominos’ “Keep On Growing.” He was joined by bassist Mike Elizondo, who produced Future Soul, and had previously performed with the band on Wednesday.
Much later in the set, the Tedeschi Trucks Band offered a nod to the longtime Beacon Theatre March Madness runs by the Allman Brothers Band with an appearance by Warren Haynes, Trucks’ longtime guitar foil in the ABB. As Haynes recently said of their musical relationship: “It all started when he was 11 years old. That’s when we met and played for the first time together. Obviously he was way more advanced at 11 than most adult guitar players…I’ve always said that if two guitar players are too similar, it’s a bit redundant sounding, and if they’re too different, it doesn’t mesh. But if there’s the right balance of similarity and contrast, then you get this thing where the sum’s greater than the parts. He and I had that at the very beginning. It also is really important that you’re listening intently to each other without losing the flow, and that’s just such a big part of improvisation. He had that even as a really young man and it just grew and grew and grew…Then when we were hurled into this situation where we were in the Allman Brothers together, there was a lot of pressure for us to take that chemistry even further because that’s a daunting spot to be in, but a beautiful opportunity that I wouldn’t trade for anything. I think we expounded upon that.”
Haynes and Trucks manifested their chemistry a few times on Friday. It began when Haynes contributed to a fiery version of Little Feat’s “Spanish Moon.” He then remained for an extended take on the ABB’s “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.” Haynes later returned for a rousing “Let’s Go Get Stoned” encore.
The Tedeschi Trucks Band is back at the Beacon this evening for the seventh of their ten March dates.
