Song Premiere: Garcia Peoples “Heart and Soul”
Brooklyn-based outfit Garcia Peoples are prepping for their second LP release of 2019, an expansive, exploratory collection dubbed One Step Behind that opens with a 32-minute title track. Today, we present another preview of the effort with new studio cut “Heart and Soul,” a meditative, piano-fueled number punctuated by a spacey instrumental middle section.
“‘Heart and Soul’ is inspired by the vulnerable, almost hymnal quality of Richard Manuel’s ballads,” bassist Derek Spaldo, who wrote the tune, tells Relix. “This song sat in my back pocket for seven years. But it wasn’t until I found myself in the middle of several heartbreaking life crises that the song was finally ready to emerge from me. Amidst all the pain that I felt, ‘Heart and Soul’ poured out of me. And especially as the song came together in the studio, the extended musical interlude in the piece took on a profoundly transformative quality—one that is a thrill to revisit. The continuing journey of ‘Heart and Soul,’ from conception to performance, has been deeply healing for me. I hope it can help to heal others who listen to it.”
Listen to “Heart and Soul” below. Garcia Peoples will play a monthlong weekly residency at New York’s Nublu starting Oct. 3 with a number of special guests and theme nights.
