“I’m going to explore,” Sam Cohen croons with a tepid reservation that swells into a soaring confidence throughout the title-track of The Color. Prophetic words from the founding member of Apollo Sunshine whose newest project, Yellowbirds, proves to be a vehicle for his own exploration. His “solo” debut finds the Brooklynite and a loose collection of his musician friends charting a daring path. On “In Our World,” the psychedelic projections of Cohen’s mind meld with the conventions of indie-folk to create an experimental, yet accessible psychedelic sound. Fuzzed out guitars awash in reverb, combine with hook-laden synth-lines to bring the sounds of yesteryear into the modern day ( “The Honest Ocean” ). Somewhere between Talking Heads and Sufjan Stevens, Yellowbirds has claimed its own patch of the sonic landscape.
