The musicians who worked with Herbie Hancock in the fruitful mid-‘70s created their own band in 1975 using the name from his album Head Hunters. After various lineup changes, Mike Clark (drums) and Bill Summers (percussion) form the core of the group’s lineup. They are joined by guests throughout, including original Headhunter Bennie Maupin. Their goal here is to redefine The Headhunters for the hip-hop generation. That point is driven home by the periodic rapping of Jaecyn Bayne and by guests such as Snoop Dogg on “D-Funk.” The likes of George Clinton, Killah Priest and Del the Funky Homosapien also contribute the all-star effort. But this isn’t the balanced freneticism of Thrust; it is glossy groove jazz with occasional breakbeats.
