The Avett Brothers Debut Dead Cover at Red Rocks
After performing a series of dates with their AVTT/PTTN project, the Avett Brothers and Mike Patton wrapped up their 2026 gigs with the collaborative endeavor in late June. As the Avett Brothers then posted, “AVTT/PTTN is a collaboration that has been in the making since we were all kids. The recording of our album was nothing short of a sacred experience and getting to know each other leading up to performing was a great joy and thrill. Touring this material for all of you who came out has been the most meaningful and life-changing creative blessing we have ever encountered. Special thanks to all who attended the shows, a big shoutout to the crew who worked so very hard to solve the unsolvable mystery, and to Mike Patton for taking a chance on us. We love you, Mike, and we love all of you. Thank you. See you out there.”
Mike Patton added, “AVTT/PTTN wraps up for 2026. I have never been so bummed for a tour to end. Thanks to all that came to the shows but most importantly thanks to the Avett Brothers band and crew for welcoming me into their family. Each and every show was a blast because of the people that made the show happen. I already can’t wait to do it again.”
The Avetts have remained on the road, with dates confirmed into the fall. Over this past weekend, the group appeared at Red Rocks for three nights of music, from Friday through Sunday. Saturday’s show, which was the group’s 40th headlining gig at the venue included a special debut cover. The group performed a version of the Grateful Dead’s “Ripple” early in the evening.
Back on July 11, 2014 Bob Weir & RatDog opened for the Avetts at Red Rocks. During RatDog’s set-closer, the Seth and Scott joined Weir and the band for “Franklin’s Tower.” Then during the Avetts’ set Weir later sat in on “Going Down The Road Feelin’ Bad,” “Little Sadie” and “Uncle John’s Band.” (A month earlier Weir had appeared with the Avetts during their Mountain Jam performance during “Blue Yodel No. 4,” “Go to Sleep: and “The Race Is On”.)
Three years later on Sunday night at LOCKN’ Weir joined the Avetts for eight tunes. On that night Weir came out for Jerry García’s “Mission in the Rain,” then remained for the Avetts’ “Go to Sleep” followed by covers of “The Race Is On,” “Mama Tried,” “Going Down the Road Feeling Bad” and “When I Paint My Masterpiece.” The artists then closed out the festival with the encores “I Know You Rider” and “I Shall Be Released.”
