On Thursday, Sept. 19, Jeff Lynne’s ELO took the stage at Madison Square Garden for the second in a two-night stand at the legendary stadium. As the reformed band’s celebrated Over and Out Tour winds towards its conclusion, this was the final New York show for the project fronted by Electric Light Orchestra founder, singer and guitarist Lynne. To fit this momentous occasion and celebrate the legacy of a truly great progressive rock outfit, the band took a starship cruise down memory lane, issuing treatments of the band’s memorable classics that transported the crowd back to their heyday. Among the standout songs from this 20-song tribute were opener “One More Time,” “Evil Woman,” “Steppin’ Out,” “Strange Magic,” “Can’t Get it Out Of My Head,” “All Over the Word,” “Turn to Stone,” “Shine a Little Love” and “Don’t Bring Me Down.” When the band had received its roaring response to the iconic catalog, they dropped their breakout hit as an encore, sending the audience off into the night with the thrill of “Mr. Blue Sky.”
