David Gilmour at Los Angeles’ Intuit Dome (A Gallery + Recap)

On Friday, Oct. 25, David Gilmour finally touched down on the West Coast for a highly anticipated staging at Los Angeles’ newly minted Intuit Dome. This performance arrived as the legendary Pink Floyd guitarist and songwriter’s first show in the United States in eight years, since he plotted a few stops across the country for his 2015 album Rattle That Lock. Now, with the explosive new solo offering Luck and Strange and the momentum of a triumphant return to the spotlight on his European tour, Gilmour begins a new 9-stop series, with three shows at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl, five at New York’s Madison Square Garden, and the one kickoff from the Intuit Dome.
Gilmour’s Intuit Dome show stuck to the stable setlist exhibited in London and Rome, which the artist committed a good deal of effort to refine with his new live band as he prepared to release his widely acclaimed new studio album. The resulting 24-track, two-set list reviews the entirety of Gilmour’s sprawling catalog to cherry-pick a few standouts in line with the artist’s personality today, balancing classic Pink Floyd against late-era gems and solo favorites. Though some attendees doubtlessly would have been interested in more cuts from the Roger Waters-led Pink Floyd heyday–which sourced seven songs in the show–there’s no substitute for the enthusiasm for this classic rock figurehead delivering a show that has revitalized his creativity.
Gilmour began his show with Rattle That Lock’s opener “5 A.M.,” which was fondly recalled alongside standouts “A Boat Lies Waiting” and “In Any Tongue” in the second set. He then stormed into the shadowy Luck and Strange intro “Black Cat,” followed by the title track; all nine songs from that project (minus the two bonus tracks) appeared in Friday’s setlist. Gilmour then rotated again, looking back to Pink Floyd’s classic era with “Breathe (In the Air),” “Time,” “Breathe (Reprise)” and “Fat Old Sun,” followed by “Marooned,” from the Gilmour-led chart-topping Pink Floyd project The Division Bell.
Other Pink Floyd cuts through the show included “Wish You Were Here,” “High Hopes,” “Sorrow,” “A Great Day for Freedom,” “The Great Gig in the Sky” and “Coming Back to Life.” After a thrilling show lined with top-tier soloing from the unparalleled enduring psychedelia axeman, perhaps highlighted by a collaboration with his daughter Romany on “Between Two Points,” Gilmour closed out the show with soul-stirring encore of “Comfortably Numb.”
Gilmour returns to the stage on Oct. 29-31 for his remaining performances in Los Angeles. The artist will then fly over to New York for five dates at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10. For tickets and more information, visit davidgilmour.com/tour.
