Premiere: Jenna Nicholls Unveils New Single, Meditation About Moving On, “When A Good Love Goes Away”

Singer-songwriter Jenna Nicholls has entered a new era and documented the transitions on her fourth album and first for Royal Potato Family, The Commuter, due on October 10, 2025. As the second single, and follow-up to the album introduction, “I Lost My Gal From Memphis,” Nicholls delivers “When A Good Love Goes Away,” a vintage-tinged meditation on moving on while still maintaining love and respect for what once was.

Like the changeover she sings about on the track, Nicholls’ career path mimics a sense of transformation; moving from the bustle of New York City to unlock creativity upstate, signing with Royal Potato Family after releasing three albums out of pocket: Curled Up Toes in Red Mary Janes, The Blooming Hour, and Radio Parade, and finding solace under the guidance of a new producer, Grammy-award-winner, Larry Campbell.

“When A Good Love Goes Away” transports the listener to the 11th Arrondissement in Paris with a voice that stops pedestrians in their tracks and imparts the identity of an American woman redefining her role and sense of self. The andante tempo creates a shuffle meant for slow dances or a reflective cup of coffee, in addition to a sweep of twang that elevates the songstress’ capacity to convey emotion; acceptance tied to the line: “Ain’t it sad when a good love goes away.”

“This is a song about the end of a marriage. I recalled a friend saying she knew her marriage was over years before she voiced it. They’d both been desperately trying to avoid what they both knew deep down was coming.  Saying goodbye to something you’ve built with someone is like mourning a death: one experiences the stages of grief in a very similar way, i.e. denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance – they’re all there. This song represents being able to love but to still leave at the same time,” Nicholls told Relix

Campbell commented, “Jenna Nicholls writes a beautiful song, then she delivers it with heartfelt emotion, but without pretense or artifice giving us a glimpse into the soul that created it.”
