Revisiting Newport Jazz Festival 2022

The 2022 Newport Jazz Festival will return to Fort Adams State Park on July 29-31. Tickets for this year’s fest are now on sale.

Here’s a look at last year’s event with photos by Caroline Budnick and Dean Budnick.

Friday’s lineup featured a mix of indie, modern jazz and jam-associated acts, including  Khruangbin, Kamasi Washington, Yola, Cory Wong and Newport Jazz Artistic Director/bassist Christian McBride. The next day, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue split headlining duties with the legendary Mavis Staples, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah brought his unique “Stretch Music” to the festival and Ledisi honored Nina Simone. Sunday’s highlights included an animated performance from 83-year-old saxophonist Charles Lloyd, a “Black Radio” set from Robert Glasper—who appeared all three days in different configurations—and a spirited hour with The Jam Jawn, the ad-hoc union of McBride, guitarist John Scofield, drummer Joe Russo, keyboardist Marco Benevento and surprise guest Mikaela Davis on harp. Before an emotive Andra Day closed out Newport Jazz, McBride walked to the front of the stage for a FaceTime chat with 95-yearold festival founder George Wein, who passed away six weeks later. Wein will be honored at Newport Jazz 2022.
