Roadkill Ghost Choir: Quiet Light EP

The first notes of Quiet Light, the debut EP from Florida’s Roadkill Ghost Choir, are pensively plucked banjo, but it’s a misleading introduction. This is not another mock-Mumford. Though the first single “Beggars Guild” is gorgeous and haunting, it’s the only link to the current folk-revival scene. The other four songs are clear-eyed, open-sky rock and roll, drawing mostly from the expansive Southern vibes of My Morning Jacket’s classic It Still Moves. (Singer Andrew Shepard could’ve graduated from the Jim James school of outer-space vocals.) The six-minute “Drifter” is most impressive, with Shepard floating high above the earth, looking down, while his band creates a Band of Horses-style bed of electric and pedal steel guitars. At just 24 minutes, Quiet Light is a too-brief introduction, but it’s the perfect length to leave you ready for more.
