ALO: Silver Saturdays

For the first time in eight years, the members of ALO have decided to release a full-length LP. And the band is billing their ninth album, Silver Saturdays, as not just another record, but a celebration of friendship that’s carried these easy-going dudes through 25 years as a band. With that context in mind, it’s an obvious success. ALO has always been a feel-good experience for listeners; their jams are dappled in sunshine and mellow grooves, and Silver Saturdays doesn’t mess with that formula very much. This is the first time ALO’s included drummer Ezra Lipp, a veteran player who has shared the stage with Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, on a proper LP, and his playful percussion certainly gives these tunes some added bop. Truthfully, Silver Saturdays arrives just on time. The eight years since the band’s latest LP haven’t been the most cheerful for so many Americans—and these 10 tracks offer a lovely escape. “Rewind,” with its fluid guitar soloing from Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz, would’ve felt at home in your favorite Phish tune. The song’s harmony-laden chorus delivers a sobering message, but it goes down like honey atop the band’s tight, glowing grooves: “Oh, we can’t rewind/ We can’t erase our minds. We cannot take back time anymore.” While Silver Saturdays doesn’t quite break new ground for the band, it remains a pleasure to hear Lebowitz, keyboardist Zach Gill and bassist Steve Adams—with their new-ish drummer—still having this much fun in the studio. You can feel their smiles beaming across the studio on songs like the shuffling, bouncing “Rare Air,” with another hitting-the-nail-on-the-head chorus: “Times change, there’s no use fighting it/ Sometimes I just want another hit. I’m comin’ up for rare air with you tonight.”
