Widespread Panic’s first tour in a decade continued last night at Sacramento, CA’s Channel 24. It was the 40-year-old group’s first appearance in California’s capitol since 1991, when they opened for Blues Traveler during their only other Sacramento stop.

The night kicked off with an energetic segue from “Let’s Get The Show On The Road” into “Wondering,” though the band then had to briefly pause the festivities due to a medical emergency in the crowd. They picked things up soon after though, moving from “Bear’s Gone Fishin’” into “Blackout Blues” and then two extended sequences, first from The Meters’ “Just Kissed My Baby” into “Radio Child” and then from “Machine” into “Barstools and Dreamers” and, finally, a set-closing cover of NRBQ’s “Flat Foot Flewzy.”

The group’s second set was also full of improvisational moments. Things kicked off with a segue from  “Contentment Blues” into “Conrad” and then the band offered three multi-song sequences, Bloodkin’s “Trashy” into “Gimme,” “Diner” into both “Fishing” and “Pilgrims” and “Up All Night” into Parliament’s “Red Hot Mama.”

For an encore, they kept the surprises going, opening with the ‘Til The Medicine Takes track “Nobody’s Loss” and then busting out The Band’s 1975 Northern Lights – Southern Cross classic “Ophelia” for the first time since an August 26, 2023, show in Napa, CA. Widespread Panic will kick off a three-night stand at Los Angeles’ Orpheum Theatre on Thursday.
