On Monday evening, Jeff Tweedy returned to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The master lyricist, who has been on the road in support of his latest solo triple record, Twilight Override, arrived at New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater and appeared alongside fellow program guest Nick Offerman for an interview segment, in addition to performing Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s “Ffuny Ffriends” with Hayley Williams and her band. Watch below.
Last night’s musical performance highlighted a collaboration between Tweedy and Paramore’s frontwoman, who personalized the 2011 Unknown Mortal Orchestra cut “Ffuny Ffriends.” The track was chosen as a nod to The Late Show cast and crew, ahead of their May 21 finale. The pair’s cover leaned into groovier territory than the original recording, with Tweedy contributing on his half-moon electric guitar and Williams handling the main lyrical lift and applying rhythm and jangle via her tambourine.
Also included was a conversation between host Colbert and his special guests Tweedy and Offerman. The longtime pals, [Offerman has participated in past iterations of Tweedy and Wilco’s biennial Solid Sound Festival, as a comedic bonus], shared tales and giggles about their friendship and even joked about welcoming Colbert into their friendship fold, given the impending opening in his schedule.

Tweedy just wrapped the West Coast leg of his Twilight Override tour. Before the onset of the Solid Sound Festival in North Adams, Mass., June 26-28, Tweedy will put on two solo shows in his native Chicago, May 29-30 at the Vic Theatre.
