Legendary bassist Bootsy Collins has long expressed his deep appreciation for Jimi Hendrix. For instance, in 1995 he contributed to a version of Hendrix’s “If 6 Was 9” on the Axiom Funk project with Bill Laswell, George Clinton, Bernie Worrell, Eddie Hazel and Gary Shider. Fifteen years later he served as the voice of the Hendrix in the documentary Voodoo Child, which told he guitarist’s story via archival writings.

Collins has taken another opportunity to honor Hendrix via a version of “Manic Depression.” He enlisted guitarist Eric Gales and drummer Adam Deitch to join him on the tune. In a Facebook post, the bassist writes, “Back in 1967, my brother Jimi Hendrix shook the whole world with ‘Manic Depression.’ That music still speaks, still inspires, and still takes us higher. Eric Gales helped me add some extra love, funk, and soul to this tribute to the great Jimi Hendrix for the last Friday of Men’s Mental Health Month.”

“Manic Depression” is now streaming via multiple platforms and appears below.
