Tunde Adebimpe Talks Phish, Future of TV on the Radio, Solo Music and More

Actor and TV on the Radio frontman Tunde Adebimpe has spoken to The Hollywood Reporter about various topics. During the conversation that occurred before the highly anticipated release of Twisters, a new natural disaster drama in theaters today, July 19, Adebimpe touched on Phish’s jammed-out “Golden Age” cover, the future of TV on the Radio and the potential for a solo set.

In the interview, Adebimpe was asked if he knew Phish’s intent to cover “Golden Age” before the Vermont foursome’s initial 2009 debut. He responded, “No! We were playing shows, and people kept telling us, and I don’t think it really registered. Like the words ‘Phish is playing your song’ didn’t make sense to me at first, but then, look, when you put something into the world, you don’t know how it will resonate or how it will come back to you.”

Continuing on the topic of his Phish connection, Adebimpe added, “It’s always cool when bands do covers — and just funny to me. I mean, look, I’m in my late 40s, I can’t change my view. It’s still weird to me that anyone is listening to my stuff. Just recently someone told me that Third Eye Blind did ‘Wolf Like Me,’ and it’s great. At another part in my life I may have been like, ‘Well, what does that sound like?!?’ But honestly, it’s cool.”

Regarding Phish, Adebimpe asked his interviewer if the group covered “Golden Age” while participating in their Sphere residency. Upon confirmation, the musician exclaimed, “Oh, wow, maybe that’s our in to the Sphere!” He followed up by adding, “Let it be known! We’ll play the Sphere!”

Apart from the jamband favorites, when asked about the TV on the Radio’s future, the musician clarified that social apps are the place to stay updated on big band decisions, “Okay, well, first: The way I operate on Instagram is I have a post-it note. Then, I run into the burning shack of Instagram, I put it on a wall, and then I leave. I don’t like being there, but I understand it’s necessary. Anyway, Instagram will be where anything is announced.”

He also added fuel to the fire, asserting that his solo plans have taken a front seat. “However, I can say that I just wrapped up my own record. And that will be out … in the future. And you … I can say … you might have an opportunity to buy a ticket to something related to that, or something related to TV on the Radio … in a while.”
