On September 25, Karina Rykman will release her sophomore studio album. Late Checkout was recorded with Gabe Monro at Trey Anastasio’s The Barn and LCD Soundsystem’s DFA Studios. She is joined on the 12 tracks by her longtime bandmates Adam November (guitar, loopers, effects) and Chris Corsico (drums).
Rykman has been rolling out the songs from the record Late Checkout over the past few weeks. First up was “Easy, Rider,” which also opens the album. The title track came next, a few weeks later. Today Rykman is sharing “Shoegaze Summer” which is also accompanied by a music video.
The bassist explains that “‘Shoegaze Summer’ was the first song we recorded at The Barn. It was fully written, instrumentally, in a room with my band, Adam November & Chris Corsico, during a 72-hour band lock-in in the summer of 2024, and then I wrote the vocal melody and lyrics shortly thereafter. It’s been a staple in our live sets ever since. Within its dreamy, reverb-drenched atmosphere comes the pummeling weight of riff after riff. It’s a force! It’s catchy and heavy. It’s dreamy and full of left turns. Ethereal drift one minute, and pure adrenaline the next, and the end unleashes a sonic fury that I’m not sure we’ve ever been able to capture in a studio as effectively before.”
Danny Clark directed, produced, and edited the video. The song is also streaming over multiple platforms.
Pre-orders and pre-saves for Late checkout are now available
Rykman will kick off her tour in support of Late Checkout with a hometown show at New York’s Webster Hall on September 25.
