Trey Anastasio Announces New Side Project, Ghosts of the Forest, with Jon Fishman, Jen Hartswick, Ray Paczkowski and Others

Trey Anastasio has announced a new band, Ghosts of the Forest.

The new side project, also featuring Phish drummer Jon Fishman, trumpeter and vocalist Jennifer Hartswick, singer Celisse Henderson, Trey Anastasio Band bassist Tony Markellis and Trey Anastasio Band keyboardist Ray Paczkowski, will play six shows in April 2019 including dates in Portland, ME, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Albany, NY, Boston and two shows in New York City.

It seems that Ghosts of the Forest will serve as a creative counterpoint to the Trey Anastasio Band, which has been a consistent musical outlet for the Phish frontman for over two decades.

Like T.A.B., Ghosts of the Forest is said to feature all new music and recall Anastasio’s short-lived, theatrical 8 Foot Fluorescent Tubes project. A precursor to Trey Anastasio Band, 8 Foot Fluorescent Tubes featured Tom Lawson and Heloise Williams as well as future T.A.B. members Markellis and Russell Lawton. (Dave Grippo, James Harvey, Bobby Hackney and Fish also joined in for the one-off band’s second set.)

Paczkowski has been a constant player in Anastasio’s various side projects including 70 Volt Parade, Dave Matthews & Friends and various incarnations of T.A.B..

Other past Anastasio outfits include: Oysterhead (with Les Claypool and Stewart Copeland), Surrender to the Air (with Marshall Allen, Damon Choice, Michael Ray, John Medeski, Marc Ribot, Oteil Burbridge, Fishman and several others), G.R.A.B. (with Mike Gordon, Joe Russo and Marco Benevento) and the one-off New York! project (Gordon, James Harvey, Pistol Stamen, Tom Lawson and special guest Page McConnell). He has also toured as an acoustic act and paired with various orchestras in recent years.

Henderson, the newest addition to the fold, has an impressive mix of musical and Broadway credits ranging from work with Mariah Carey to Melissa Etheridge to the Broadway run of Godspell, and performed with Phish during their 2016 Halloween tribute to David Bowie. She has also appeared on TV shows like 30 Rock.

Tickets for the new band’s April tour will go on “real time pre-sale” on Wednesday Dec. 12 at 12 Noon ET. General on sale will begin Friday, Dec. 14 and Saturday Dec. 15 (depending on the venue).

Meanwhile, Phish are set to return to Madison Square Garden from Dec. 28-31 for their traditional New Year’s Run and the band’s Riviera Maya destination event is slated for Feb. 21-23, 2019.
