The Wood Brothers have returned today to announce a tour and new single supporting their ninth studio album Puff Of Smoke. Arriving on Aug. 1 from their Honey Jar/Thirty Tigers imprint, the next offering from the two-decade roots trio of brothers Chris and Oliver Wood and Jano Rix is an 11-track meditation on uncertainty and accepting the limited understanding and ability that make us human. In the fall, the band will take their new material on the road with a 17-stop US headline tour, crossing the Southeast, Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast from Nov. 6 to Dec. 13.
The Wood Brothers’ Puff of Smoke Tour will commence with a performance at Knoxville, Tenn.’s Bijou Theater, leading the ensemble up to the Midwest for eight stagings, including Nov. 7 at Columbus, Ohio’s Bluestone, Nov. 13 at Minneapolis’ Pantages Theater and Nov. 15 at Chicago’s Riviera Hall. After a few weeks away, the band will cross into the Mid-Atlantic with a Dec. 3 staging at York, Pa.’s Appell Center for the Performing Arts, then hit such storied stages as Washington, D.C.’s 9:30 Club on Dec. 4 and Pittsburgh’s Roxian Theatre on Dec. 7 before wrapping the run with Northeast stops at Brooklyn N.Y.’s Brooklyn Paramount on Dec. 10, Portland, Maine’s State Theatre on Dec. 12 and Lebanon, N.H.’s Lebanon Opera House on Dec. 13.
Alongside their new batch of tour dates, The Wood Brothers have shared “The Trick,” their latest single after “Witness” and “Pray God Listens.” In a press release, guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Oliver Wood elaborated on the song: “‘The Trick’ is about how we beat ourselves up with self-doubt and constant worry, and how nice it would be to be more bold and ignorant—which is easier said than done. But not giving a damn seems like the goal if you want to stay present, positive, and creative. The song itself was built upon a Fender Rhodes run through distortion and octave pedals that Jano Rix was riffing on in the studio. While that’s a different recipe for us, it was very much an improvised performance, so it has an energy that most of our fans can appreciate.”
Puff Of Smoke is available to pre-order now. Pre-sale for tickets to The Wood Brothers fall tour is live, with a general on-sale to follow on Friday, June 20, at 10 a.m. local time. Read on for the album’s full tracklist, and learn more about the Wood Brothers at thewoodbros.com.
