Premiere: Chris Hillman Covers Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers”
Chris Hillman, co-founder of the Byrds, and later the Flying Burrito Brothers, Manassas and Desert Rose Band, continues to create engaging music. The late Tom Petty produced Hillman’s most recent album, Bidin’ My Time, and also appears on the record, along with Hillman’s Byrds bandmates David Crosby and Roger McGuinn; the Heartbreakers’ Benmont Tench, Mike Campbell, and Steve Ferrone, and Desert Rose Band’s John Jorgenson, Pedersen, and Jay Dee Maness.
Today we premiere Hillman’s live performance of Petty’s “Wildflowers,” the song that closes out Bidin’ My Time. Hillman tells Relix, “I wasn’t even aware of the song “Wildflowers” until Herb Pedersen brought it to me for us to sing on the MusiCares show honoring Tom in January 2017. I loved the song and felt it would be a perfect addition for the Bidin’ My Time project. We performed it at the Troubadour in West Hollywood in the Fall of 2017 where Tom was originally planning on joining us on stage. Nonetheless, it was a very special moment to be back on the Troubadour stage where it all began for me back in 1963. It’s a beautiful song and one that has taken on a whole new meaning since Tom’s untimely passing.”
