On Tuesday, December 17, brother and sister duo Jack and Rachel Antonoff hosted the 10th annual Talent Show benefit concert to raise funds for The Ally Coalition, which “provides critical support for organizations dedicated to bettering the lives of LGBTQ youth and raises awareness about the systemic inequalities facing the LGBTQ population.”
The holiday season event returned to the Jack H. Skirball Center For The Performing Arts, the 850-seat theatre in Greenwich Village. Unlike years past, the artist lineup was kept under wraps leading to the event, except for the Bleachers house band, allowing for surprises that ranged from appearances from past participant Andrew Dost (Fun.) and the patriarch of the Antonoff family (Jack and Rachel’s dad) Rick Antonoff, who unleashed a rendition of “Soft Spot,” in a similar vein to prior occasions.
The event began with an ode to Jack’s past band configurations, such as his Steel Train days, referenced at the top of the frame with a pair of pulls, “Kill Monsters” and “Bullet.” The rare live appearance from Steel Train followed the group’s 2013 breakup and subsequent one-off festival set in 2016.
Among the high points was Trey Anastsio’s participation in the musical gathering. Notably, Phish’s frontman had previously contributed to the Ally Coalition’s 8th annual benefit in 2022, which greased the tracks for his return last night. Anastasio joined the Bleachers for their track “Me Before You,” a pull from the group’s latest LP, the Relix cover story discussed, namesake collection, released on March 8, 2024.
The Vermont jam favorite stuck around and added his chops to a cover of Mitski’s “My Love of Mine All Mine.” Remi Wolf also helped Anastasio, Jack, and the Bleachers band with the Steve Wonder-penned Rufus released “Tell Me Something” in addition their own “Soup.”
As for the host, he leaned into fan favorite Bleachers material, pulling in “Modern Girl,” “Chinatown,” and “I Want to Get Better” before the night’s seasonal send-off, “Merry Christmas, Please Don’t Call.”
