My Morning Jacket Bring “Heart of Gold” and “I Get Around” to The Fillmore

Last night, May 28, My Morning Jacket returned to The Fillmore in San Francisco for the second night of its hotly-anticipated four-night run at the venue. Keeping to its guarantee, night two followed its explosive series opener with no repeats, pulling 15 further classics and deeper cuts from the Americana vanguard’s vast catalog, plus two setting-appropriate covers. This run marks the group’s first shows at the legendary Bay Area music hall since its widely acclaimed 2006 New Years shows, and the ceremony around the group’s new shows has delivered some surprises already.
My Morning Jacket kicked off its set with “In Color,” a relative rarity from its 2021 self-titled set that has since been staged only 20 times. The band continued into a 17-track single-set performance loaded with fan favorites, including “Strangulation!,” “War Begun,” “The Way That He Sings,” plus some more recent gems like “Never in the Real World.” The set also featured two stand-out oddities, 2002’s “Come Closer” and “Oxen/How Could I Know,” both of which saw bust-outs after more than a decade at the band’s One Big Holiday concert getaway in April.
The highest points from MMJ’s first set arrived with its covers. The band first delivered Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold,” referencing their participation in the artist’s final Bridge School Benefit, then later presented its second-ever performance of The Beach Boys’ “I Get Around” in a salute to the legendary California crooners. After this second tribute, the band performed 2005’s “Anytime” to close out the main portion of the show, then returned for a four-song encore of “Old Sept. Blues,”–with an intro tease of Santo & Johnny’s steel guitar classic “Sleepwalk”–“It Beats 4 U,” “Spring (Among the Living)” and “One Big Holiday.”
My Morning Jacket will take the stage at The Fillmore once more tomorrow, May 30, then close out its four-night series this Friday, May 31. For tickets and more information on the band and its 2024 touring plans, visit mymorningjacket.com.
