A truly eclectic mix of musicians paid tribute to The Rolling Stones at New York’s Carnegie Hall. The latest all-star charity concert organized by City Winery principal – and original Knitting Factory owner – Michael Dorf, the evening focused on music from The Rolling Stones’ classic hits collection Hot Rocks 1961-1971. Dorf’s past tributes – which raised money for music education – have honored the music of Bruce Springsteen, Elton John & Bernie Taupin, Bob Dylan, R.E.M. and The Who, among others. Last night’s house band was led by Larry Campbell.

Italian rapper Jovanotti and members of TV on the Radio opened the night with a cover of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” backed by Young Audiences NY Chorus. Though the song appears on the final side of Hot Rocks, Dorf moved the segment to the start of the show so the childrens’ choir could participate without staying up as late. Ronnie Spector then took the stage to cover the classic “Time is on My Side” and the rest of the evening’s musicians’ proceeded to cover the album ‘s tracks in sequential order.

The evening contained many highlights, including Marianne Faithfull’s rendition of “As Tears Go By” —a song Mick Jagger and Keith Richards originally penned for her. Later in the night, Art Garfunkel made a rare public appearance without his wig to sing “Ruby Tuesday,” while Rich Robinson jammed on “Play with Fire” with the help of his current band which features Particle’s Steve Molitz. Jackson Browne covered “Let’s Spend the Night Together” and returned to the stage later in the night to join Marc Cohn on “Wild Horses.” Meanwhile, Jackie Greene ran through “Brown Sugar,” a song he covered with Stones saxophonist Bobby Keys on Sunday night.

After the performers finished Hot Rocks, Marianne Faithfull surprised fans by delivering a song not included on Hot Rocks, “Sister Morphine.” Faithfull wrote the number with Richards and Jagger and the Stones included it on 1971’s Sticky Fingers. For an encore, most of the evening’s performers – with the notable exception of Art Garfunkel – returned to the stage for a sing-along version of “Tumbling Dice.”
