Listen: The Beatles Share Unreleased Demo of “Yellow Submarine” with Vocals from John Lennon

Today, The Beatles shared “Yellow Submarine (Songwriting Work Tape / Part 1),” a stripped-down early demo of off their beloved 1966 LP Revolver, which is set to get an expansive reissue on Oct. 28 via Apple Corps Ltd., Capitol and UMe. The new demo features vocals and modest acoustic guitar playing from John Lennon. Famously Ringo Starr handles lead vocals on the studio recording of the song.
In an interview with USA Today, the reissue’s producers Giles Martin and Starr, divulged how the song came together. “The boys used to write a song for me and they’d present whatever they thought would be good for me,” Starr shared. “They had this song and they decided to liven it up.”
In the piece, Martin added,“ I had no idea [the work tape] existed…. It wouldn’t have been as commercial in that original form, and you can hear them working together and pushing each other in different directions.”
Along with unearthed, stripped down and beautiful outtakes like “Yellow Submarine (Songwriting Work Tape / Part 1),” the reissue of Revolver will also include a 100-page hardbound book, newly mixed songs sourced from the original projects mono master tapes and more.
