Today, Houston-bred trio Khruangbin and Malian singer and guitarist Vieux Farka Touré shared “Tongo Barra,” the second release from their upcoming collaborative album, Ali, out Sept. 23 via Dead Oceans.

Through Ali, together with Khruangbin, Vieux pays tribute to his late father, a revered Malian guitarist who was known as the “African John Lee Hooker” Ali Farka Touré. The older Farka Touré created a style known as “desert blues” and eventually collaborated with American multi-instrumentalist Ry Cooder on a joint album titled Talking Timbuktu – which was released in 1994. Ali, who sang in the languages of Songhay, Tamasheq, Fulfulde and Bambara, would go on to win three Grammy awards.

“I want this album to convey love. It is about the love that Ali brought into the world. It is about the love that I have for him and that Khruangbin has for his music. It is about pouring your love into something old to make it new again,” said Touré of the collaboration.

Cooder was celebrated for his interest in traditional music and his collaborations with traditional musicians from many countries; much in the same way that Cooder and Ali bridged cultural worlds through the universal language of music, Khruangbin and Vieux hope to do the same as the next generation. On “Tongo Barra,” Khruangbin and Vieux experiment with different sounds, with guitarist Mark Speer and Vieux’s vocals aligning for a mesmerizing groove.

Khruangbin added in the statement announcing the LP, “We made this album to honor Ali’s life and body of work. We hope this collaboration enlightens more people to Ali’s musical legacy.”

It’s notable that Khruangbin and Vieux recently performed together at the Prospect Park Bandshell in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn, where they played an unreleased track from Ali titled “Mahine Me.”
