Last night, moe. and Umphrey’s McGee’s moe.ment.UM outing rolled into Freehold, NJ’s ParkStage at the East Freehold Showgrounds. While most shows on the extended, highly collaborative run have featured a single set by each band as well as a joint encore, yesterday’s festivities was part of the area-wide North to Shore Festival and the ParkStage concert boasted bonus support sets from Lotus and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong. (Of note, Lotus guitarist Tim Palmieri had already made an appearance on the moe.ment.UM tour, sitting in when the package came to New Haven, CT earlier this month.)
moe. closed yesterday’s concert and, at the top of the encore, the Buffalo-bred sextet invited the members of Umphrey’s McGee out for the Karl Engelmann song “Bright Lights, Big City,” which they have been covering since 2004. They remained on stage for the classic moe. tune “Captain America” and then Pigeons Playing Ping Pong and moe. bassist Rob Derhak’s daughter Emma all emerged, joining the evening’s co-headliners for the Grateful Dead’s “Franklin’s Tower.” The cover closed another sequence as well since Umphrey’s McGee had concluded their show earlier in the evening with a song often paired with “Franklin’s Tower,” “Help on the Way.”
moe. will kick off a two-night run at Livington, MT’s Pine Creek Lodge Friday while Umphrey’s McGee will play a free show in Virginia Beach, VA as part of the Oceanfront Concert Series on July 8.
