On Monday, Khruangbin took the stage at New York’s Webster Hall for an intimate performance celebrating the 10th anniversary of their classic studio debut, The Universe Smiles Upon You

For a sold-out crowd of superfans at the small room, the beloved psychedelia trio worked through a 16-track set centered on their first album and its surprise update, The Universe Smiles Upon You ii, which reimagined the original to document the crystallization of their eclectic musical tastes into a singular, genre-defying sound. Classic versions of songs like “Little Joe & Mary,” “Dern Kala” and “People Everywhere (Still Alive)” were matched with double-takes like “The Man Who Took My Sunglasses II,” “White Gloves II” and “M. Blanc”; the new spin on album opener “Mr. White” is now exclusive to a Japanese edition of the CD, in a nod to “Bin Bin,” which also figured into the set.

Khruangbin’s anniversary underplay also featured essential cuts from their broader discography, including “August 10,” “María también” and “Three From Two.” The evening’s biggest surprise came when they returned to the stage for an encore with a debut treatment of Sade’s smoldering quiet storm classic “Cherish the Day,” preceding a grand finale of “Zionsville II.”

Khruangbin’s The Universe Smiles Upon You anniversary tour will continue with 10 further shows through Nov. 25. Find tickets and more information at khruangbin.com.
