George Porter Jr. to Join Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra for Funk-Filled Night of Music

On Wednesday, April 8, 2026, fixture of the New Orleans funk scene for more than 60 years, George Porter Jr., will join the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra for an evening of musical entertainment at the Big Easy’s own New Orleans Jazz & Blues Market. The orchestral experience offers a robust blend of the guest artist’s musical merit, fused with the LPO’s 67-member task force of instrumental support.

According to the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra’s overview of the musical occasion, interested parties can expect the big band to embrace Porter Jr.’s funk heritage via “a dynamic synthesis where driving basslines meet sweeping strings, bold brass, and a rhythmic conversation between symphonic textures and deep groove.”

Folks can expect an exploration of material that touches on Porter Jr.’s original catalog [including songs from the Meters] and associated covers, led by Scott Terrell, conductor of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. According to the event’s ticket page, the occasion is scheduled to run for 90 minutes.
