David “Dawg” Grisman Preps ‘Bare Bones Volume II’ Duo Collection with Jerry Garcia

David “Dawg” Grisman is tapping back into his archive of work featuring friend and collaborator the late Jerry Garcia by presenting Bare Bones Volume II – Other Tunes & Arrangements. This 16-track collection features original duo takes on songs that have become subsequent staples of the Grisman/Garcia repertoire. The set will be exclusively offered through Grisman’s Acoustic Discs label and website tomorrow, Saturday, August 17.
The forthcoming deliverable shines the light on Grisman and Garcia’s process of selecting and arranging choice material, including rarities that permeate the set, such as “The Sweet Sunny South.” The tune was released on the pair’s Shady Grove LP as a banjo duet despite its original capture on mandolin and guitar, ultimately offering fans an additional format to enjoy the bluegrass favorite. Other songs like “The Crawdad Song” and “Moonlight Bay” were tried once but never graced a setlist and will be offered on Vol. II.
Tomorrow’s release will be available in the sonically superior Hi-Definition (24-bit, 96 kHz) format. The Acoustic Disc exclusive will also provide customers access to a free Acoustic Encounters podcast featuring Danny Barnes and Grisman, framed with each volume from the collection. For Vol. II, due Aug. 17, the podcast leans into the Shady Grove set, Grisman and Garcia’s joint Acoustic Disc offering, a collection of traditional folk songs.
Previously, the pair unveiled the Vol. I of its Bare Bones set, which featured fan favorites ranging from “Dreadful Wind and Rain” to “When First Unto This Country,” a take on Elizabeth Cotten’s “Freight Train” and traditionals, such as “Whiskey in the Jar.” Available for purchase and download, the set finds Garcia offering vocals, guitar, and banjo, while Grisman helms mandolin, mandola, vocals, guitar, banjo and tenor lute. In continuation of series, Vol. III will arrive in the future. Check Acoustic Disc for the latest information.
While Grisman’s live appearances are sporadic, the musician’s son and his band, Sam Grisman Project, celebrate Dawg and Garcia’s songs on the road as a touring ensemble. SGP will perform in the Bay Area this weekend, Aug. 17 at Berkeley, Calif.’s The UC Theatre for late-night gigs which will feature the great Peter Rowan. They will also participate in Phil Lesh’s Sunday Daydream Vol. 4, on Aug. 18. Visit the band’s website for tickets and more information.
