Billy Strings’ Broken Leg Enters Thrasher’s Hall of Meat

For nearly three decades, Thrasher has enshrined the most brutal bails, slips and slams that pro-skateboarding has to offer in the Hall of Meat. As the magazine has transformed over 45 years into the authoritative record of the sport’s forefront and underground, the wince-inducing video series has become a badge of honor for those willing to put their bodies on the line, now cataloged in social media clips. After his tour-ending injury last month, Billy Strings has earned the gruesome honor.
Strings earned his place in the Hall of Meat during his April 18 performance at Charlottesville, Va.’s John Paul Jones Arena, where set-break antics were swiftly rewarded with an injury that will take him off the road until July. The Hall’s post, which Strings shared on his Instagram story, includes a slow-motion video of the trick that landed him in the hospital, plus the X-rays and gown shots he shared when he first announced the injury. The bluegrass firebrand’s skateboarding credibility was further underscored just days after his break with a personal message from Tony Hawk, who wished Strings well and told him “it’s always those easy tricks that get us” in a Cameo video.
It’s one more prize for the Grammy, IBMA, and Americana Music Association Award-winning artist’s mantel. Get well soon, Billy.
