Video Premiere: Devon Allman Shares Exclusive ‘Miami Moon’ Preview with “White Horse”

Devon Allman is back with new original music. The artist shared the initial preview of his impending full-length album, the visually conjuring Miami Moon, with the first single, “White Horse,” and the exclusive Relix-premiered music video for the funk-infused, destined classic. Released today, the optical companion piece captures the second-generation musician receiving support from guests like George Porter Jr., Ivan Neville, and more.

“White Horse” glows with an idealized illusion of the Miami sunset, vibrant shades of pink illuminating a backlit setting, a visual element that complements the composition’s warmth and timelessness, carried sonically by an undeniable funk through line from New Orleans mainstays: Porter Jr.’s pumping bass line and Neville’s naturalness behind the keys. Besides the called-upon help, Allman is at his best, highlighting his delivery with belted soul-tinged lyrics, acoustic riffs, and the know-how of decades of experience.

Reflecting on today’s release, Allman told Relix, “’White Horse’ is a fun one. I wrote it on bass guitar in the back of the tour bus while we were on tour with Samantha Fish. I had been listening to a lot of Curtis Mayfield and Nile Rodgers production. This song is about NOT waiting for your ‘ship to come in’ or for your big break….just embracing the moment and believing in yourself. The video was shot with legends Ivan Neville and George Porter Jr. on board and the vibe was to bring the Miami Moon album cover aesthetic to life.”

The first of eight original songs to arrive off of Miami Moon, “White Horse” provides an introduction for the next chapter of Allman’s musical career after stepping off massive national and international tours with The Allman Betts Family Revival and 2024’s Allman Betts Band, as well as world recording setting accomplishment of performing 50 shows in 50 states in 49 days.

Miami Moon was recorded at the historic Criteria Studios in Miami, the same location where The Allman Brothers’ Eat a Peach and Derek and the Dominos’ Layla were recorded. The collection was produced by Grammy-Award winner Tom Hambridge, known for his previous work with Buddy Guy and Chris “Kingfish” Ingram.

Reflecting on the album and offering further details, Allman said, “Making the Miami Moon record with these legendary musicians has been a high point of my career. They brought these songs to life with their masterful playing and timeless feels. As for the approach, a couple things were different this time: First, writing the songs on bass guitar was a first for me and allowed the grooves to be the main focus. Also, letting go of some previous, limiting thought processes allowed some of my other influences to enter the chat for the first time such as Curtis Mayfield, Sade, The Cure, Steely Dan…among others. I believe you can hear some flourishes of those true loves on this album.”

“Additionally, recording in the same hallowed halls where Dad made the Eat a Peach record and where Uncle Duane and Eric Clapton recorded the Layla record, made for a very special setting for us all to work in. We kept it fun and we kept it funky…..we ordered Cuban food, watched the NBA and jammed in a circle for days. In a world where you can make records in the basement or your bedroom, I’m so grateful to have done this record in a classic manner,” he continued.
