In celebration of Newport Folk Festival’s return to Fort Adams State Park this weekend, which has already featured a number of surprise collaborations on Friday and Saturday and wraps up today with music from Trey Anastasio and more, we’re taking a look back at Anastasio’s last appearance at Newport in 2008, when his solo acoustic set included the one and only performance of “If I Could Be A Sailor.”

The Phish frontman, who at the time was just months away from announcing that band’s impending reunion, penned “If I Could Be A Sailor” with songwriting partner Tom Marshall and dedicated the Newport performance to the onlookers taking in the show from the Newport bay.

2008 was Anastasio’s only appearance at Newport Folk until today, and his set also included another debut, the first of only seven live renditions of “Peggy,” which Anastasio dedicated to Marshall. Below, watch a video of “If I Could Be A Sailor,” along with a full-set video of the performance.
