Noel Gallagher Talks U2 Fandom, Leaving Oasis and Songwriting on Lars Ulrich’s _It’s Electric!_

Former Oasis member and one half of the most entertaining ongoing social media family spats Noel Gallagher stopped by Beats 1 studio to chat with Lars Ulrich for the Metallica drummer’s show It’s Electric for a new two-part episode that will begin to air this weekend, and the preview clips show a bit of a different side to Gallagher, who, along with his brother and potato truther Liam, is known for his colorful interviews.

This time around, Gallagher actually talks about something he loves, namely U2. While the iconic Irish outfit can sometimes find themselves at the butt of many a joke, Ulrich and Gallagher rightly profess their admiration for Bono and company’s songwriting and electric live performances. Gallagher notes the “pride” U2 show in their work when asked what effect they have had on his career. “They don’t take it for granted,” he says, remembering studio time he’s spent with the band and how hard they worked at each song. “They don’t just turn up and go for the numbers.” Gallagher does realize that there are many U2 haters, though he says he’s turned several friends onto them. “People don’t have the love for them that we do, right? I’ve kind of given up defending them in England. I’m like, ‘I don’t give a fuck what you think about them anymore.'”

Two more clips from the It’s Electric! interview also cover the topics of songwriting—including a funny anecdote about Gallagher’s wife claiming she’s never seen him write a song—and Gallagher’s leaving Oasis, a move that was followed by a text from Ulrich himself questioning the decision with “words to the effect of ‘You’re either incredibly brave or incredibly fucking stupid.'”

Watch the previews below. Part one of the interview airs this Sunday, April 8, at 3pm ET, with part two to follow next week.
