Marc Millman looks back at Jazz Fest 2012…Bo Dollis & Wild Magnolias – Jazz & Heritage Stage By far one of the highlights of the whole festival. If you know anything about the history of New Orleans music and funk in particular, then you know the Wild Magnolias from classics like “Hand Wanda,” “Corey Dies On The Battlefield” & “Smoke My Peace Pipe.” Bo Sr. has been ill for many years and always makes an appearance with his son Bo Jr. at Fest. This year, he didn’t let anyone down. He was wheeled onto the stage and even managed to stand for a moment or two. The backing band is Billy Iuso & the Restless Natives. And what the crowd got was FUNK. Bo Jr. even jumped down off the stage and over the barricade into the rapturous crowd. And of course they played “Hand Wanda” for the faithful.

Galactic – Acura Stage Corey Glover came out and sang on several including “Cult of Personality.” Trombone Shorty also joined the band.

Funky Meters – Gentilly Stage Approximately 12 hours after The Original Meters left the stage of the Howlin’ Wolf club, this line-up funked it up for the Fairgrounds’ crowd

The Bounce Shake Down featuring Big Freedia, Katey Red, Keedy Black & DJ Poppa – Congo Square Bounce is a Hip Hop phenomenon that comes straight out of the Big Easy and is something that jamband fans are becoming familiar with. Big Freedia is the biggest star. And even if you don’t like the music, the visuals are hard to deny!

Preservation Hall & Friends 50th Anniversary Celebration – Gentilly Stage This may be the only time a band has played the Festival twice. After a great set the day before in the Peoples Health Economy Hall Tent, the band was on the Gentilly stage with plenty of big names to celebrate 50 years. Guests included Allen Toussaint, Bonnie Raitt, Ani DiFranco, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, Steve Earle & Trombone Shorty. In addition, the Junior version of the band and two of its founding members (one of whom is now 101 years old) played out the crowds on the second largest (and most popular with the locals) stage.

Rockin’ Dopsie Jr & The Zydeco Twisters – Fais Do-Do Stage If you’ve never seen thsi band, then you are missing out on one of the greatest live party acts out there. Fronted by the son of the original Rockin’ Dopsie, this band has the distinction in the Zydeco world of being led by a washboard player and not an accordionist. From traditional Zydeco songs to Funk and even Rock from the Rolling Stones, Dopsie throws a party worthy of ending the Festival

Sharon Jones – Blues Tent Sharon was the final act in this tent. Backed as usual by the Dap-Kings, she played her version of a classic late 60s/early 70s Soul revue

Neville Brothers – Acura Stage Every year, you can count on New Orleans premier musical family to close out the Festival from the main stage. So after the Foo Fighters wowed the crowd for two hours with their Arena-ready Rock, the four brothers took the stage to play out the crowds for another year.
