Gov’t Mule Bassist Kevin Scott Shares First Single from Forthcoming Self-Titled WAXpaper Release

On April 26, WAXpaper will release its eponymous debut album. This project emerged from Gov’t Mule bass player Kevin Scott’s weekly improv sessions in Atlanta, which go back 14 years. Scott, Spencer Pope (keys) and Darren Stanley (drums) recorded the initial tracks during six hours of improvisation at Diamond Street Studios in Atlanta, with engineer/producer Jason Kingsland. The music was set aside for a little while, then during the pandemic, New Orleans-based singer Sasha Masakowski came on board adding her own tones and vocals nuances. At that point Scott and Kingsland invited some additional musicians into the mix, with guitarists Emil Werstler and Carter Arrington adding leads, and Zach Piles contributing custom synth sounds on top.

Today we are premiering the first single from the record, “JMAKN06.” Scott tells Relix, “”After spending years visiting and being inspired by Jamaica on various tours and on my own, this is my weird take on dub and dancehall — but in a darker, Atlanta-gothic inspired sense. It showcases the whole WAXpaper crew, and also our combination of live-recordings and samples and overdubbed sounds.”

The tracklisting for the forthcoming album appears below the stream of the new song. The album will be released by 29th Street Editions, the New York-based label that focuses on improvised music. 29th Street Editions has released recordings from Greyhounds,  Marked for Death, Spencer Pope,  Reed Turchi, Evan Sarver, the McGuire Zwang Duo and many others.
