Summer Stars: Beats Antique
Here is the first of our “Summer Stars,” emerging acts featured in the 2011 Relix Festival Guide who will be making the rounds this summer…

It’s common practice for bands to make music specifically tailored to the sweat-inducing needs of dance floor enthusiasts, but how often do you hear about sonic purveyors crafting their sound to accommodate world dancers and circus performers? The Bay Area global-glitch outfit Beats Antique
– which employs evocative dance routines in its sensory-centric live shows – began its journey as the hip-shaking soundtrack for Miles Copeland’s Bellydance Superstars and decided to take the percussion-heavy, hypnotic jams to the next level. Composed of producers Tommy Cappel and David Satori along with accomplished belly dance performer and producer Zoe Jakes, Beats Antique combine worldly beats, slinky moves and a frenetic energy that transcend the live DJ experience.
“We wanted to incorporate all the elements that we are familiar with as performers,” explains Cappel. “We really wanted to showcase all our collective talents into one arena where people could get truly inspired.” So what can you expect from a Beats Antique show? “We incorporate live drums, marching bass drum, electric Turkish banjo, viola, and live electronics,” he says. “We often bring guest musicians and dancers to perform with us, but mostly it’s just the three of us rocking out and having a blast onstage.”
Appearing at: Bonnaroo, High Sierra, Electric Forest, All Good, Bear Creek and more.
