Exposed: moe. at 35
On Saturday night in Albany, moe. wrapped up a landmark year. In the spring, the revered sextet released its latest studio album, Circle of Giants, the group’s first with keyboard player Nate Wilson. Meanwhile, the members of moe. have maintained an active transcontinental tour itinerary as they celebrate the 35th anniversary of their formation at the University of Buffalo. Here, Rob Derhak (bass, vocals), Al Schnier (guitar, vocals), Chuck Garvey (guitar, vocals), Jim Loughlin (percussion, vibes), Vinnie Amico (drums) and Wilson share some photos spanning the band’s singular career.

Rob: Either Broadway Joe’s or Valentines—most likely Joe’s, but Valentines had the dropped ceiling as well. Good Lord, we are young and obviously broke. Extra points for the duct tape holding my cable in. Also, I am still playing that bass.

Chuck: An overexposed shot on stage where you can’t tell that I have a “man bun.” Thank Zeus.

Jim: It’s almost like I used to intentionally try to break stuff.

Vinnie: I must have just gotten back from the salon.

Nate: I was 15 when this picture was taken, but I still would have joined the band if they asked. Only thing this picture is lacking is lightning.

Rob: Life of the party over here!

Chuck: Of course, I was hypnotized by a squirrel or something.

Find someone who holds you like Vinnie holds Al.

Chuck: ‘95 or ‘96-ish. When we were not on the road (which was seldom), we would set up and rehearse, jam and write at the Albany house. Relaxing in the basement next to my amp and its newly constructed plywood “road case” underneath—DIY AF.

Vinnie: This was the first promo pic with me after I joined the band— Weehawken, N.J., January ‘97.

Jim: The dawn of the dreads.

Al: I believe this was shot in Chicago by Dave Vann. I believe this was also the last time Relix let us do our own stunts.

Vinnie: Al, Rob and yours truly, most likely during my first tour with the band, winter tour 1997.

Jim: Ahh, the good ol’ days, back when I couldn’t afford clothes.

Al: Broadway Joe’s with Jim on drums!! I believe this would’ve been the early/mid ‘90s, after we’d already left Buffalo. Clearly, Rob is very skeptical about whatever I’m playing.

Rob: I love this photo. We spent all day walking around Athens, Ga., taking photos. Here we are unwinding at a bar at the end of the shoot, and this is the photo they end up using. We could’ve saved ourselves a lot of money, and a lot of time, if we just did what was instinctual and hit the bar first.
