The New Pornographers: Brill Bruisers

There’s little on this New Pornographers record attributable to the “three-minute symphonies” of the famous Brill Building—those legendary tunes like “Yakety Yak,” “Save the Last Dance for Me” and “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do.” But pop music’s unbridled youthfulness and energy, a siren song to teenagers since the 1950s, is clearly flowing through Brill Bruisers. “Champions of Red Wine,” with its cascading synthesizer lines, throbbing dance-floor beat and mesmerizing vocals, “Another Drug Deal of the Heart,” a pink-hearted, leader-of-the-pack diary entry, and the grandiose mmmbop of the title cut are as easily digestible as cotton candy. Fortunately, it’s not all pink-spun sugar: “War on the East Coast” and “Born With a Sound” draw straight from the well of ‘80s pop-punk, giving the record a broader scope than just dancefloor delirium. This ain’t the blues, but then, Muddy Waters never hung out with singer Neil Sedaka.
