The Dirty Heads: Cabin by the Sea

Five Seven

Cabin by the Sea begins and ends with the sounds of seagulls and crashing surf, and there doesn’t seem to be a better way to frame this summery mix of alt-reggae, acoustic pop rock and hip-hop than with a glimpse of the band’s SoCal home. Guest appearances include Matisyahu, Rome Ramirez and Ky-Mani Marley, whose smoky voice echoes his father’s on “Your Love.” Sharply punctuated horn lines, staccato guitar and tinkling piano enliven “Hipster,” while “We Will Rise” has the hazy ambience of an old-school dub track. The Dirty Heads have mastered the multifold layering of percussion and rhythm guitar heard in all classic roots reggae. And although the lyrics never stray far from the topic of smoking weed, every song features strong vocal performances ranging from sublime harmonies to spitfire rap.
