Goose: Everything Must Go

Goose are studio wizards—somehow capturing their live lightning-in-a bottle energy on record. On the band’s fourth LP, Everything Must Go, they deftly blend solid songwriting with some blistering and adventurous solos, making an argument against tired mutterings that jambands only excel on stage. Their rise has been momentous. First forming just over a decade ago, the Connecticut dudes’ popularity was supercharged during the pandemic, and today they’re one of the improv world’s biggest draws. All the factors that led to this quick and steady climb are on display throughout Everything Must Go, especially Rick Mitarotonda’s crisp, alt rock-hero vocals and absolute guitar-shredding. Goose has road-tested most of these 14 songs, with three—“Your Direction,” “Dustin Hoffman” and “Iguana Song”—debuting, as of this writing, on the album. On more than half the tunes on Everything Must Go, Mitarotonda sings about animals or beasts— being one, chasing one, moving like one. That animal energy pulses through the LP. On “Atlas Dogs,” you get a gently creeping groove, the band majestically moving as if they’re slow-stalking prey. Mitarotonda sings of being “on the mountain,” “under a yellow desert moon,” and “just a shadow in the starlight,” longing to get “back to the wild again.” And after a few minutes, he gets there—the song unfurls into a gorgeous, starlit guitar jam. “Animal” opens with the sounds of a forest before busting into a tight R&B groove with Mitarotonda singing his stated purpose: “Sister, can you hear it?/ Calling from the deep, the evolutionary instinct to get up and move your body.” Goose once again brought D. James Goodwin (The National, Bob Weir) on board to produce Everything Must Go, helping to give the album a bright, bold and crystal-clear sound. Listening to these studio songs burst into blazing jams, you can almost see the technicolor lights of a live show. Sure, no album can replace the live experience, but Goose gets close.
