Slightly Stoopid: Meanwhile… Back at the Lab

Slightly Stoopid have always been crowd-pleasers, bringing so many fused styles and genres to the table that most people could find something they liked. Pleasantly chilled out is the name of the game—these guys, after all, released an album called Slightly Not Stoned Enough to Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid. That trend is unwavering on the band’s eighth studio effort, Meanwhile… Back at the Lab. At the San Diego band’s core, of course, is a softer-edged version of ‘90s-era Sublime—some hip-hop loops, sing-rapping, laid-back guitar riffs and a healthy dose of reggae. Slightly Stoopid is at their best on Meanwhile when they find the balance between all their influences; Stoopid’s dip into punk (“Fuck You”) isn’t such a comfortable fit. “Fades Away” is a perfectly dreamy reggae ballad. “Life Rolls On,” with its affected drum kit giving a funky backbeat to liquid guitar lines, hits the same lovely, summertime sweet spot as 311’s 2001 calling card “Amber,” but with some added saxophone flow. Meanwhile will be a good pick for summertime barbecues—these aren’t grooves that’ll grab you, but rather a pack of 15 likeable tracks that call for beers and sunny, suburban pools.
