Mike Doughty: Circles Super Bon Bon…

Ron Hart on September 27, 2013

Mike Doughty has made his disdain for the Soul Coughing-era of his two-decade career well known. But he comes one step closer to accepting his legacy as leader of one of the ‘90s most innovative and underrated alt-rock acts with the release of his latest solo LP. Funded through PledgeMusic.com, where Doughty reached his goal a quick 16 hours after launching the project, Circles Super Bon Bon… sees the former Knitting Factory lounge-doorman reclaiming 13 of his favorite Soul Coughing tunes as his own, working alongside notable underground hip-hop producer Good Goose (Mac Lethal, Homeboy Sandman, Hand Job Academy). And while Clinton-era nuggets like “True Dreams of Wichita,” “Mr. Bitterness” and “Unmarked Helicopters” might not be a far cry from the versions that he did with Mark De Gli Antoni, Sebastian Steinberg and Yuval Gabay, they sure are a hoot to hear again.
