Kyle Hollingsworth: All We Are

Kyle Hollingsworth, the seasoned keyboardist from the eclectic jamband The String Cheese Incident, has released his first studio album in seven years. All We Are is infused with a deep musical scope from funk-fusion to afro beat, resulting in a fresh take on Hollingsworth’s own unique musical abilities. Alt-rock inspired, the ten tracks evoke themes of life transformations, with several songs drawing on personal experience. Colorado is a love song to his adoptive home state and the time he loves to spend outdoors, mostly above 9,000 feet. It is clear that the high country of the Rocky Mountains fills his spirit: “Leaves they rattle and they spin/ Breathe is pure/ Air is thin/ Painted scenes with evergreens.” Carnival is an upbeat tribute to his 30 plus years spent touring with The String Cheese Incident, and if you’ve been to a Cheese show, you know that the band loves to play in a festive circus-like atmosphere. Always up for experimentation, Hollingsworth utilizes a new third-person narrative technique on two songs—Waiting on Time, an organ-based track inspired by the sound of Gregg Allman, is a tale about a man suffering from addiction; Coming on Strong is a story about a woman running from a hurricane, which serves as a metaphor for her own personal strife. It includes soothing female backup vocals which enhance the story telling. “Lost in the Mirror,” Hollingsworth’s musings about his 13-year-old daughter’s newfound infatuation with her appearance, is a song any parent with a tween will appreciate. All We Are, which closes with a reprise of the title track, is a uniquely presented album about self-exploration and humanity’s place in the universe.
