Kaki King: The Neck Is a Bridge to the Body

On her Kickstarter page seeking initial financing for the project, Kaki King writes, “The Neck Is a Bridge to the Body is a new kind of guitar exploration with live music and video projection. What sets this show apart is that, for the first time, the guitar itself is being used as a projection screen.” Intriguing, for sure, and the multimedia presentation was reportedly a success artistically. But how, one might rightfully wonder, does this music—intended for audiovisual performance—fare minus all that other stuff? Not to worry: King has always been something of a conceptualist, striving to extend her instrument’s known limitations, and The Neck… is cinematic in scope, even without the optical component. Incorporating sweeping ambience and jagged, sonic mood swings, intricate fingerpicking and a string quartet, industrial racket and pastoral, close-miked lushness, there’s more than enough going on within to compensate for the absence of graphics. Just make your own; she won’t mind.
