2020Soundsystem: Falling

Not all electronic offerings need to be filled to the brim with sweat inducing straight-to-the-club bangers. So it is on Falling, 2020Soundsystem’s mellowed-out follow up to its acclaimed debut No Order. With an easy-listening-meets-Acid House vibe, this Leeds, England-based outfit offers up a drowsy mix of ‘90s Manchester-inspired synth tracks that fail to launch. Sounding more like the lost tapes of Ian Brown’s lackluster solo career, Falling feels like a mish-mash of throwaway genre fads that would have been better left behind. From the ambient ambulance wails and crunchy beats of opener “We Get Down,” the stompy Underworld-esque “Dark Matter,” or the trippy title track that adopts a very Happy Mondays-like chorus of “ooh’s” and “ah’s,” Falling presents a safe approach to house music that rarely breaks from conventions.
